SHAH ALAM, August 17: The Umno-BN Government should maximise law enforcement in addressing all forms of violence against women, said Rodziah Ismail.

The Executive Councillor in charge of Women’s Affairs said, as the Federal Government, Umno-BN must vigorously fight the said crime, including the enforcement of law.

“It is not easy, but with determination, it (domestic violence prevention) can certainly be implemented,” she said in a press statement yesterday.

She was commenting on a two-minute 20 second video which is being spread through social media sites, showing a scene where a woman was beaten by her husband in an elevator in Penang on 12 August.

The video was said to have been uploaded by the victim’s brother, Mohd Yunus Ahmad Ramli, 31, last Tuesday after being disappointed with the excuses of the police who did not do anything after the report was made.

The victim’s husband, Mohammad Affandi Ismail, 36, pleaded not guilty at the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate Court in Penang on charges of intentionally causing injury to his wife.

He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail sentence of one year or a fine of RM2,000 or both, if convicted.

Despite the failure of the Federal Government, Rodziah said that the Selangor State Government is actively updating prevention, protection and prosecution efforts to fight the crime of violence against women.

“We will implement community policing programmes, install closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance at strategic locations, provide an allocation of RM500,000 to upgrade the services at the One-Stop Crisis Centre (OSCS), as well as adding more shelters,” she said.
