SHAH ALAM, 28 Sept: The Umno-BN Government’s attitude of not having political commitment to curb corruption is the reason why the country’s position continues to decline in the global index list of countries free from corruption.
This is due to the practice of selective prosecution of only dragging small individuals, and the upper class as the factor of why corruption is becoming rampant.
Member of Parliament for Penang Hill, Zairil Khir Johari said, it shows that the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) introduced by the Prime Minster, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, failed to achieve its goal.
Speaking to TVSelangor, he said that efforts to curb corruption can be implemented if the government is serious on the matter.
“This shows that the transformation programmes championed by Najib have all failed. It is in line with the earlier report by Global Financial Integrity (GFI) which found Malaysia to be second in the flow of illegal money.
“This shows that corruption is a rampant in Malaysia,” he said.
According to the Asia-Pacific Fraud Survey Report, Series 2013, Malaysia has the highest level of corruption at 54 percent followed by China at 34 percent.
Elaborating, Zairil said, the existing legal provisions should be implemented properly without bias.
“Fighting corruption is actually easy. It just needs political will. This means that the government has to implement all laws properly and not be biased,” he said.
