Offenders cannot be prosecuted as long as there is no action from the MACC

SHAH ALAM, 9 Oct: Selangor Senator, Dr Syed Husin Ali, agrees that any civil servant found guilty of abusing department provisions should be prosecuted in court.

However, he still questioned whether the action can be implemented seeing that the authorities, such as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), is more comfortable being silent every time a misconduct is reported in the Auditor-General’s Report.

“Every year there are reports of misconduct happening, however, it is normal for there to be no follow-up or action taken.

“Because no stern action is taken by the authorities, how can offenders be prosecuted in court? I have never heard of abuse of power reported in the audit being brought before the court,” he said when contacted by Selangor Kini.

The Senators, who are in session at the Dewan Negara to debate the Supplementary Supply 2013 Bill, urged for stern action to be taken against those involved in the abuse of provisions.

Apart from sacking, employees or government officials who commit misconduct should be prosecuted in court so that the same thing does not happen again.

Syed Husin said that the presentation of the Auditor-General’s Report is like a ritual being performed every year. No decisive action is taken against perpetrators and no continuous monitoring is done, causing the activity to go on without fear.

“It has been the practice. No decisive action is taken because it is done by the higher-ups in other departments,” he added.

The Dewan Rakyat convened on 23 September and will end on 30 October.
