SHAH ALAM, 29 Dec: Literature and art should be moved to the streets to enlighten the public about a certain matter, instead of being just performed on stage or in books
National Laureate, Datuk A.Samad Said, said that art is very helpful in delivering a true story for generations to come.
“It is true, that literature is insightful, but it would be greater of it can bring about change. Literature is no longer in books and literature is no longer in front a microphone, and literature should not only be performed on stage.
“Literature should now be in the middle of the street,” said Samad Said, quoted from Harakah Daily.
He said this when asked to speak at the Leisurely Art and Dinner organised by the People’s Artist Axis (Paksi) at Alang Sedayu in Gombak recently.
He also reminded the younger generation to make art and literature a medium that is changing and moving.
“If you want to continue to be victims, I cannot stop you. If you want to change it, I am willing,” he said.
He said that he felt obliged to speak up for democratic change, which is deemed to be becoming less noble.
“If someone asked me, sir, what are you doing on the road (when) we have already chosen representatives to take care of our nation.
“I would say, according to Ahmad Boestamam, power is only power. Power can be moved, but power also has sides.
“And we are in a very tough situation now, when although we have received our democracy, we do not actually glorify democracy.
“What is an 81 year-old man like me struggling to be on the road for PPSMI, for Bersih 2 and 3, for what?
“But I think that when nothing is done, we cannot change anything,” he said.
