KUALA LUMPUR, 4 Dec: 565,157 MyKads have been reported missing or stolen with an increase of 32 percent compared to last year according to statistics, as of October.
The Member of Parliament for Segambut, Lim Lip Eng, said that the drastic increase shows that about 1,860 MyKads go missing in one day, with an estimate of one MyKad missing every minute in Malaysia.
He said that the loss of identification cards is something that is suspicious and may possibly be misused by criminals or phantom voters in the 13th General Election.
“Are these missing MyKads used by criminals or phantom voters during the GE-13? All these questions need to be clarified by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) because the amount is too large.
“However, I am sure that these losses are linked to the last GE,” he said in a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.
Lip ENg said that the ministry is also required to submit detailed statistics regarding the loss of MyKads by detailing the area, district and sub-district involved.
He said that the failure of the ministry on the issue will raise various doubts and would shake the citizen’s confidence on the government’s credibility.
“The government must provide a detailed explanation regarding this matter because if they fail to submit statistics, it will give rise to many doubts,” he said.
On 20 November, the Deputy Home Affairs Minister, Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar told the Dewan Rakyat that 397,079 MyKads have been reported missing in 2010, 413,068 (2011) and 429,137 (2012).
