Water Disruption: Local Authorities Asked to be Ready to Help Affected Consumers

SHAH ALAM, 14 Dec: The Selangor Government has ordered local authorities to ready tankers to send water supply to areas affected by the water supply disruption which will take place from 17 to 22 December.

The Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, said that the Selangor Government takes the announcement made by the Selangor Water Supply Company (Syabas) seriously as the water supply disruption will affect over a million users in the Klang Valley.

Abdul Khalid said that the Selangor Government will hold a meeting with Syabas on Monday to obtain detailed information about the water supply disruption, in addition to their preparations, when they expect it to recover fully and the areas affected.

This water supply disruption is due to the temporary shut-down of the Sungai Selangor Phase 2 (SSP2) Water Treatment Plant (WTP) for upgrading, repairs and the replacement of key assets at the plant.

“Although the disruption is unavoidable, the Selangor Government will ensure that Syabas, as the water operator in the Klang Valley, ensures that this disruption will not terribly affect and burden the people’s daily life.

“The State Government will also call upon local authorities of affected areas to be prepared, since Syabas will not supply tankers throughout the disruption period except for critical consumers such as hospitals, dialysis centres and places of worship,” said Abdul Khalid in a press statement.

Abdul Khalid said that Syabas has been asked to ensure that the water supply will recover quickly, or at least within the stipulated period, to ensure that consumers will not be too burdened by this water supply disruption.

“As it is known, the Selangor Government is in the process of acquiring water supply services from concessionaires to provide supply that is more efficient at a reasonable tariff rate.

After the acquisition is done, the Selangor Government is determined to ensure that the welfare and interests of the consumers are put first when making decisions concerning temporary stop-work of plants or unexpected situations,” said Abdul Khalid.
