Selangor PKR: Be Careful When Issuing Statements, Avoid ‘Allah’ Issue From Being Exploited

SHAH ALAM, 7 Jan: Selangor has asked representatives of the people from DAP to be careful when issuing statements regarding the proposed amendments in relation to the expansion for non-Islamic religions in the state.

The Selangor PKR Information Chief, Shuhaimi Shafiei, said that this may make matters worse and aggravate the situation because it involves religious sensitivities.

He said that the Selangor DAP should first wait for the full report by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) to the state government and discuss the next step during the Pakatan Rakyat meeting.

“That is why the Selangor PKR, including Assemblymen, has been forbidden to make any statements so as to not aggravate the situation.

“We have examined the full report from JAIS to the state government and it will be discussed during the Pakatan meeting so that we can think of appropriate measures,” he told Selangor Kini.

Previously, Anwar reminded some Selangor DAP Assemblymen who brought up the proposal to amend the enactment in relation to the use of the ‘Allah’ word in the state.

The Opposition Leader said that they should use channels in the state government or through Pakatan Rakyat to discuss this issue.

Shuhaimi, who is also the Assemblyman for Sri Muda, said that every individual should be careful in making statements because it can be exploited by those with political interests.

He said that it is better to not respond on the issue because Assemblymen have the opportunity to discuss it in the Selangor State Assembly (DNS) session.

“Although we recognise that there are efforts by parties to give an unhealthy picture to the state government, we should be careful. Let us have more details on this matter first.

The amendment demanded by DAP Assemblymen refers to the Selangor Non-Islamic Religious Enactment (Control of Propagation Among Muslims) 1988.

Some Assemblymen from the Selangor DAP made a joint statement for the amendment to be done because they claimed that JAIS acted arbitrarily on the Bible Society of Malaysia in Petaling Jaya on 2 January.
