Selangor Targets Building 35,000 Affordable Homes in 4 Years

SHAH ALAM, 21 Jan: The State Government targets to build 35,000 affordable housing units in four years to provide an opportunity for all Selangorians, especially those earning a low to middle income, to own their own homes.

The Executive Councillor in charge of Housing, Building Management and Urban Settlement, Iskandar Abdul Samad, said that the state government, through the Selangor State Development Corporation (PNS), has already built 10,000 affordable housing units in Kota Puteri and Antara Gapi.

He said that a series of discussions will be held with other developers such as Kwasa Land and also the subsidiary company of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) by setting new policies where developers have to build 40 to 50 percent of affordable housing to achieve the target.

“The state government is introducing new policies to ensure the diversity of affordable housing development that is required to be built by developers in a project.

“The new policy involves a greater variety of homes to meet the need of the people earning a low income up to those with a household income of RM8000 a month, and it will built according to demand,” he said in a special interview with Sinar Harian recently.

Iskandar said that the state government is also targeting the construction of 2,000 rental units with an allocation of RM150 million for residents who do not own or do not wish to buy a home in Selangor.

He said that an allocation of RM100 million will also be used to implement the first Selangorku Homes development project, which targets the construction of 2,6000 units in Sungai Sering, Hulu Kelang, which is expected to begin this year.

Meanwhile, when commenting on the obstacles faced by the people of Selangor on owning their own homes, Iskandar said that it is often involving the issue of bank loans.

“The government will try to solve the problem with the RM150 allocation a year as loan assistance to buyers who have difficulty obtaining bank loans.

“We have discussed with banks to place a sum of RM10 million into a bank account to facilitate loan and payment.

“Unfortunately, the plan did not receive cooperation from the banks, even Bank Negara Malaysia which expressed their agreement previously. We really want to help in terms of housing. That is why we are providing allocations to help buyers,” he said.
