Wau Contest to Attract Young People’s Interest in Heritage

KUALA SELANGOR, 23 Jan: The organising of a wau (kite) contest would hopefully attract the young people to reach out and learn about the cultural heritage which is very popular in east coast states in the country.

The Permatang State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Coordinator, Yahya Sahri, said that the young people have the opportunity to learn techniques of preparing and handling waus, which may be unfamiliar to local communities, with the organising of this contest.

He said that he will always give his full support in the organising of wau contests by the Kampung Bestari Jaya Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) which has been held since 2010.

This year, the contest received sponsorship from a private company, Syarikat Hartalega Berhad.

“This effort indirectly upholds the cultural heritage of craft which is becoming rare, especially for young children.

“This contest has clearly been proved successful in fostering a spirit of cooperation between the local multi-racial community,” he told Selangor Kini recently.

On 12 January, he managed to witness the Wau Contest which took place at the Taman Ilmu Public Park, and 30 participants took part in the contest.

The Human Resources Manager of Hartalega Berhad, Mohamad Ridwan, was given the honour of presenting prizes to three winners of the contest; Rosli Mohamad, Nor Azali Aziz and Alias Yusoff.
