CM: Free Water for KL, Putrajaya if Restructuring is Successful

KUALA LUMPUR, 18 Feb: The Selangor Government is willing to offer 20 cubic metres of free water to residents in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, as currently enjoyed by the people of Selangor, if the restructuring is successfully completed.

The Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, said that this is part of the planned benefits from the Selangor water restructuring.

“The cost of implementing free water in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, is estimated at RM2 billion a year,” he said when speaking at the Malaysian power and Water Summit 2014.

Abdul Khalid explained that the restructuring negotiations are at the final stage and hopes that it can be finalised in two weeks.

He added that the restructuring plan is not geared to water projections for 2020, but it can continue until 2035.

He added that the State Government remains at the offer of RM9.65 billion to the four water concessionaires and will not pay a lower price than that.

If the price is not agreed upon, the concessionaires may bring this matter for Arbitration to be decided and the State Government is prepared to pay the price determined.
