CM Orders Syabas to Activate Emergency Action Plan to Overcome Water Disruption

SHAH ALAM, 21 Feb: The Selangor Government has ordered the Selangor Water Supply Company (Syabas) to activate the emergency action plan, including scheduled distribution of water, to consumers, with Syabas informing the detailed scheduled distribution plan or arrangement.

The Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, said that he is taking the unscheduled water disruptions involving several areas in the state, the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya seriously.

Abdul Khalid said that the water distribution schedule will be continued until 31 March if there is a water outage or low water pressure.

“We have also ordered the local authorities involved in sending water to affected residents, in addition to ensuring that the elevators in the People’s Housing Project (PPR) are functioning to facilitate the people to haul water.

“We have asked Konsortium ABBAS Sdn Bhd, a company owned by Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Berhad (KDEB) to supply drinking water to affected residents,” said Abdul Khalid.

He said, however, the ability of the emergency water supply is very limited and cannot meet all the demands of consumers at the same time.

“Therefore, we advise users to be prudent and avoid any wastage so that more consumers can receive this emergency water assistance,” said Abdul Khalid in a press statement.

The unscheduled water supply disruptions have occurred in some areas in Hulu Langat and Kuala Langat, involving about 27,000 houses that have experienced water outages because the Cheras Batu 11 Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and the Bukit Tempoi WTP still remains closed since 28 January due to high ammonia contamination in Sungai Langat.

At the same time, some areas in Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat, Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, involving 75,000 homes, have also experienced water outages and low pressure recently due to the sharp increase in demand following the dry and hot weather, as well as the lack of rain.

The Selangor Government will provide the latest updates from time to time and hopes that the people understand this situation because of the hot and dry weather which cannot be controlled.

“Consumers who need help can call the PUSPEL SYABAS toll free line at 1-800-88-252 or the SYABAS Local Service Centre which also has been opened in affected areas,” he added.
