SHAH ALAM, 25 Mar: The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, does not want to cooperate with the State Government to build more affordable housing for the people of Selangor to live in.

The Executive Councillor in charge of Housing, Building Management and Urban Settlement, Iskandar Abdul Samad, said that they have written to the ministry three times to express their intention to cooperate, however no response has been given till today.

The Assemblyman for Cempaka said that housing problems can be solved efficiently through discussions because it involves the interests of the people.

“I see that housing is a national problem because most people who buy houses in Selangor work in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, and even some in Negeri Sembilan.

“So, Selangor has to accommodate those working outside (the state). Therefore, there should be cooperation between the Ministry of Housing and the State Government so that this problem can be solved, but there has been no response from them,” he said in the Selangorku slot today.

Commenting on affordable housing, Iskandar said that the Selangor Pakatan Rakyat (PR) government is the first to launch such residential units at prices ranging from RM42,000 to RM250,000.

He said that it would be implemented through three policies set; through the state subsidiary company, requiring private developers to build affordable housing (Selangorku Housing policy) and the State Government itself will build affordable homes.

“We promised during the 13th General Election (GE13) to build affordable housing on our own using state provisions.

“So far, we are building 2,400 housing units in Sungai Sering, Hulu Kelang, and this will increase to 5,000 units. In fact, the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) have some places being built and have received building approvals such as in Kota Puteri, Hulu Selangor,” he said.

The first ‘Selangorku Housing’ project which is being built in Sungai Sering will use RM100 million from the RM3 billion in State Reserves.

The RM100 million allocation will be used as working capital to build affordable housing without the State Government having to take out a bank loan.

The first affordable housing development project will be built on land owned by Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) on an area of about 22.26 hectares.

A total of 2,400 housing units will be built through the pilot project with a total area of 900 to 1,000 square feet by using the prefabricated concept (IBS).
