KUALA LUMPUR, 27 Mar: Members of Parliament from Pakatan Rakyat (PR) have called Wisma Putra and Putrajaya to condemn the mass execution of 529 members of Muslim Brotherhood who were sentenced by the Egyptian judiciary.
The call was made by the Member of Parliament for Tumpat, Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar, after his motion under the Standing Order 18 (1) to discuss the issue was rejected by the Dewan Speaker, Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia at the Dewan Rakyat today.
Quoting Malaysia Kini, in his letter to Pandikar dated 25 March, Kamaruddin described the sentence as a dark mark in the history of the modern world and it is a backward step made by the Egyptian junta government.
“We have expressed our attitude and stand but we are disappointed that Wisma Putra does not dare issue a statement regarding what happened,” he said in a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Pokok Sena, Datuk Mahfuz Omar, said that Malaysia does not have to worry about intervention in Egypt’s internal affairs if they expressed an objection or protest against the sentence.
“We are not interfering but taking the appropriate action against the move by the Egyptian government,” he said.
The Member of Parliament for Bayan Baru, Sim Tze Tzin, stressed that the sentence should be objected by all Malaysians, regardless of race and religion.
“This is a wrong attitude. We have to stand together for humanity to condemn something that is wrong and unfair.
“I am concerned that if we are apathetic, a worse injustice may happen in Malaysia one day,” he said.
Pandikar, in his response letter dated today, said that the motion was rejected on the principle of bilateral relations that respects the legal and judicial processes of other countries.
He said that it was “dealt wisely for the safety and well-being of Malaysians who are still in Egypt”.
