CM: Water Industry Restructuring Retains Tariff Rate

SHAH ALAM, 8 Apr: The State Government has defended to sign the memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the restructuring of the water industry in Selangor with the Federal Government by guaranteeing that there will not be an increase in the water tariff for the next few years.

The Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, said that if the restructuring of the water industry is not done, the average water tariff rate will increase from RM1.39 per cubic metre to RM3.83, based on the concession agreement.

He said that the State Government will retain the RM1.39 rate per cubic metre of water to date and stressed that it does not intend to impose any increases to avoid burdening the people.

“If we do not carry out the water restructuring, the average water tariff in 2008 at RM1.39 per cubic metre will increase to RM1.96, increase to RM2.38, to RM2.86 and may reach RM3.83 (per cubic metre).

“We do not want the people to be burdened, that is why we have retained it at RM1.39 until now,” he said.

Abdul Khalid said this when responding to an oral question from Mohamed Azmin Ali (PKR-Bukit Antarabangsa) on the State Government’s guarantee to protect the rights of the people of Selangor in the water services industry.

Abdul Khalid said that the State Government, together with the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA), will try to resolve the issue of the water restructuring in a professional manner and provide support to each other.

He said the use of Section 114 of the Water Services Industry Act (WSIA) 2006 will also enable the acquisition of the water industry concessions in Selangor to be accelerated and make way for the Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant project.

“The ministry and the State Government will try to solve this matter via operations and not politics to ensure that the people of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya can enjoy the best water services at reasonable prices.

“This is not an issue because we are able to solve the water industry restructuring in a suitable manner for the people of Selangor, as promised.

“We also guarantee to continue to provide free water to the people of Selangor, and in fact, the people will be able to own a stake through the restructuring of the water industry,” he added.
