CM: Water Scheduling Expected to End Next Week, Mine Water Safe

KLANG, 25 Apr: The State Government is expected to end the water scheduling in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur next week if the water pumping operation from former mines to the Sungai Selangor dam yields positive results.

The Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, said any developments will be announced by the state Executive Councillor, Dr Yunus Hairi, who has been appointed as the state government’s official spokesman on the status of raw water and treated water in Selangor.

“I expect for the rationing to end next week if the conditions are good and it will be announced by Yunus, as the state government’s spokesman,” he said in a press conference during the Klang District People’s Friendly Programme here at the Hamzah Hall.

Meanwhile, Abdul Khalid said that the use of water from former mines around the Sungai Selangor Basin to Sungai Selangor is safe to use, based on an in-depth research by experts.

He said that experts also found that water from former mines are far better, especially as the mines are decades-old.

“We have tested the chemical levels in the water and experts are of the opinion that it is allowed and far better because the water is from old mines, not two or three year-old mines.

“These mines are already 30 years old and the water is far cleaner than river water,” he said.

Abdul Khalid also informed that the health department has been notified regarding these efforts and found no problem with the state government’s move.

He said that so far, the state government already owns eight powerful machines capable of pumping at least 400 million litres per day (MLD) of water and hopes that it can be increased to 700 to 900 MLD.

“So, I think that we will achieve that level and if the water level at the Sungai Selangor dam records an increase, the rationing will be terminated,” he said.
