Funds MRT Project Worth Billions, Fails to Provide Comfortable Hub for Bus Drivers

PUCHONG, 9 May: A number of drivers of a bus transit transportation company are stressed as they were forced to make a small shack in a swampy area in Puchong Prima their rest stop for the past seven years.

They claimed that they were forced to make the shack their rest stop because the company had failed to provide a specific hub for buses and a special room for drivers to rest in.

Selangor Kini found that 18 of the drivers have to stay in a wooden shack that is dirty and dilapidated, in addition to the environment around them being exposed to venomous creatures.

The traffic coordinator of the company, Nor Azman Seteh, said that they hope that the company will be more concerned about the welfare of their employees because drivers who are tired after working since 5 am till late night immediately need a place to shower, rest and eat.

“We are accompanied by rats and snakes here. When it rains, we are also afraid that this shack will collapse and there are a lot of venomous creatures here.

“With hectic working hours, we do not have enough time to rest. For example, there are 16 drivers here on main routes and two others for local routes.

“In the bus, our employers provide only two passenger seats as space for us to rest. So we want a comfortable area to rest,” he said when met yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Assemblyman for Kinrara, Ng Sze Han, said that this problem is not difficult to be solved by the government because the cost for providing a hub for the comfort of drivers is not expensive compared to the MRT project which costs billions of ringgit.

“We are aware that this company is rich. If the MRT project can be financed with billions of ringgit, why is this being taken lightly.

“If drivers do not get enough rest, how can they carry out their duties well? A comfortable rest stop is needed. It does not have to be luxurious, but also, they cannot just use wood to make the shack.

“We worry if they are not comfortable due to lack of rest, passenger safety can be compromised,” he said when visiting the rest stop with the Assemblyman for Bukit Gasing, R Rajiv.
