Water quality of alternative ponds meets Ministry of Health standards

SHAH ALAM, 22 May: The parameters of heavy metals in the sampling results of the water quality of alternative ponds meet the standards set by the Ministry of Health.

The Executive Councillor for Youth and Sports, Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Dr Yunus Hairi, said that the sampling was carried out by Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd, together with the State Mineral and Geoscience Department, and the analysis was done by the Department of Mineral and Geoscience lab in Ipoh.

He said to ensure continuous quality monitoring, follow-up sampling was carried out on May 14 at the Hang Tuah pond by the State Department of Health and the Chemistry Department of Malaysia.

“Based on the chemical analysis for the sampling on May 14, it can be concluded that all parameters of heavy metal meet the alternative water source standards by the Ministry of Health Malaysia.

“The Department of Health Malaysia (JKM) also held a special meeting on May 12. At the meeting, the alternative pond sampling which were conducted in 2011, 2012 and 2013 were presented.

“The State JKM has been directed to continue monitoring the water quality of alternative ponds and analysis will be carried out by the Department of Chemistry as before,” he said in a statement.

Yunus said that the Selangor Water Management Authority has been asked to send samples other laboratories and SIRIM for analysis.

Meanwhile, Yunus informed that at this point, there has been no pumping of water out of ponds since April 6.

However, pumping will be carried out when the water at Sungai Selangor is low; expected in early June.

“The activities carried out at this point are the pumping of water from Sungai Selangor to the Hang Tuah pond,” he said.

A total of nine pumps owned by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage have been installed around the Hang Tuah pond.

Of the nine pumps, seven are used to pump water from Sungai Selangor into the Hang Tuah pond.

“There are two pumps installed at the location for the pumping of water from Sungai Selangor to the Hang Tuah 5 pond and five pumps are installed at the Hang Tuah 6 pond.

“Meanwhile, two other pumps are installed between Hang Tuah 1 and Hang Tuah 3 and 4 because there are differences in levels of the ponds. The capacity for each pump is 2,000 cubic metres per hour,” he said.

In addition, Yunus said that cloud seeding activities will be continued till the end of this month.

“A meeting on cloud seeding was held on May 19 and the decision was the proposal for cloud seeding to be carried out in June and the following month, depending on the suitability of the weather,” he said.
