Zakat: RM23.5 million to help 32,843 poor and needy families

SHAH ALAM, 24 June: The rate of Zakat al-Fitr (charity given to the poor at the end of the fasting in the Islamic holy month of Ramadan) set for Muslims in Selangor this year remains at RM7, the same as the previous year.

The Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) appointed 2,477 al-Fitr heads and assistants across Selangor throughout the Ramadan month.

The Selangor Zakat Board, in a press statement, said that the public can also receive the Zakat al-Fitr at 25 LZS branches across Selangor, as well as some selected supermarkets.

“LZS also provides the facility to withdraw the Zakat al-Fitr through the Short Messaging System (SMS), in partnership with the Celcom and Digi telecommunication companies.

“The payment will be directly deducted from the holder’s Zakat account for post-paid and pre-paid users, without any charges,” the statement said.

This year, LZS aims to collect RM20 million in Zakat al-Fitr from Muslims in Selangor.

In similar developments, LZS has provided RM23,579,080.00 in Zakat charity to be distributed to 32,843 poor and needy families across Selangor, in conjunction with the Ramadan month and the Aidilfitri (Eid al-Fitr) celebration this year.

From the amount, RM7,460,050.00 will be distributed to 10,144 needy families. Meanwhile, RM16,119,030.00 will be distributed to 22,699 poor families.

Each family will receive Zakat assistance between RM550 to RM1,000, depending on the number of dependents.

The assistance will be distributed through 18 mosques in the state, starting June 19, 2014, and is expected to end on June 28, 2014, to help those in need in preparation for the celebration.
