54% agrees Selangor’s economy, politics are in the right track

SHAH ALAM, 18 July: The majority of Selangorians are of the opinion that the direction of the State Government, under Pakatan Rakyat (PR), is in the right track.

This was after a survey was conducted by the Merdeka Centre on 6,436 residents in eight local authority areas in the state and found that 54 percent think that the direction of Selangor in terms of social, economy and politics is on the right track.

In the survey, which was conducted from May 16 to July 6, 2014, found that 43 percent responded ‘rather right direction’ and ’11’ percent responded ‘very right direction’ when asked if Selangor was moving in the right direction politically, economically and socially.

The survey also found the six percent answered ‘not right direction’, 22 percent answered ‘no so right direction’, 16 percent had no response and two percent ‘do not know’.

The Merdeka Centre survey involved 56 percent from the Malay community, 29 percent from the Chinese community and 14 percent from the Indian community, with household incomes of 43 percent being private sector workers, 16 percent self-employed, 15 percent homemakers, 12 percent civil servants or employees of government-linked companies, 11 percent of retirees and three percent students or the unemployed.

By age, the same study involved 33 percent of respondents from the age of 41 to 50, 23 percent were from 31 to 40, 22 percent (51-60), 12 percent (21-30) and 10 percent were aged 60 years and above.

Meanwhile, according to household income, 28 percent earned over RM5,000, 26 percent (1,501 – RM3,00), 21 percent (RM3,001 – RM5,000), 13 percent below RM1,500 and 12 percent did not know or had no response.

6.2

The research was conducted on behalf of local authorities, the State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN) to the people to directly evaluate the performance of local authorities, thus helping the responsible partied to improve their performance in delivering the best services to the people in Selangor.

In addition, the survey was also conducted to promote the culture of research and general brainstorming as an aspect to improve public services in Selangor.
