Unisel develops kits to detect non-Halal ingredients within 1 minute

SHAH ALAM, 1 July: The University of Selangor (Unisel) will conduct a research on the development of Halal kits to detect non-Halal ingredients within a minute.

The Unisel Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Anuar Ahmad, said that Unisel has been given an allocation of RM1.3 million from the Selangor Government to develop the tool, which is expected to be completed in December 2015.

This tool is not just for food, but also for cosmetics and medicines,” said Prof Dr Anuar, quoted from Sinar Harian.

Prof Dr Anuar said that there should be no doubts regarding the Halal kit because they will carry out the Selangor Government’s mandate to develop the technology with trust and responsibility.

“Although it is small, it can save costs compared to laboratory tests. Therefore, please do not hesitate to use this tool because the results are guaranteed to be accurate, as good as laboratory tests which cost thousands of ringgit,” he said.

He said that Halal kits are not new. Prior to this, the country had several parties, especially universities, who tried to develop the Halal kit.

But so far, the technology which will be developed by Unisel has been identified as the most advanced.

“The Halal kit previously functioned to detect only pig DNA content.

“This is different from what we will come up with, where the Unisel Halal kit will use the nano sensor technology to know up to 0.001 percent of pig content,” said Anuar.

He said that the advantage of the Unisel Halal kit is that it can detect substances as low as 0.001 percent, the lowest substance which is normally contained in food, cosmetics and drugs in the market.

“Easy, it’s very easy! Just enter the sample into the detector, then shake until it dissolves within 10 seconds. Next, test the dissolved substance with the electronic sensor in the kit.

“Automatically, the kit will produce a fluorescent light that will determine the pig content within a minute,” he said.

He said that the production of the kit is more towards the faith of Muslims, not to profit and indirectly, it is possible to add value to the credibility of Unisel.
