Zakat payers have increased, an indication of the people’s increase in income

SHAH ALAM, 7 July: The increase in Zakat payers in Selangor is an indicator of the Selangor Government’s success in increasing the income of the people, awareness of contributing through proper channels and religious awareness.

The Executive Councillor in charge of Welfare, Rodziah Ismail, said that this was achieved through campaigns and encouragement to the community to participate in programmes offered by the State Government.

“The people’s awareness of religion means that the income they receive will be contributed to the Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) and also an increase in their income.

“If their income has not increased, this means that there is no surplus and thus, there would be less awareness to pay Zakat among the people of the state,” said Rodziah when contacted by Selangor Kini.

She said that the Merakyatkan Ekonomi Selangor (MES) programmes in the state do not just stress on merely increasing income, but it also emphasises good morals that someday, they would be the hand giving to those in need.

“The concept of charity causes awareness and a want to contribute, as well as a more comprehensive distribution to those in need,” she said.

The economy of Muslims in Selangor continues to grow positively when those eligible to pay property Zakat has increased to nine percent for the first five months of this year compared to the same period last year.

The number of Zakat payers for the period from January to May this year recorded 187,002 people compared to 172,183 last year.

During this period, the Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) has successfully collected RM178.3 million compared to RM143 million in the previous year.
