PAS Congress passed 10 motions, including repealing the Sedition Act

BATU PAHAT, 19 Sept: The 60th Annual PAS Congress passed 10 motions with seven being without debate, including the push to repeal the Sedition Act 1948.

The motion to repeal the Sedition Act 1948 was brought with the Central PAS Committee Members and the Muslimat Council, and it was presented by Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa who stressed that it is an old British law that is 66 year’s old.

He said that the Act does not require intent to determine its meaning and it does not require proof of the effects of a speech of writing to chaos or physical action.

He also touched on the fate of a few individuals who have been charged under the Act, including Safwan Anang, the University of Malaya lecturer Azmi Sharom, and the latest, Adam Adli.

“The PAS Congress urges the Federal Government to propose repealing the Sedition Act 1948 which is old and no longer relevant.

“The new Act which is to replace it should go through public consultation and through the Special Parliamentary Committee so that we do not replace the bad with something worse,” he said.
