10 illegal dumpsites seized since 2008

SHAH ALAM, 27 Nov: A total of 10 land seizures have been carried out, with 22 land remediation notices issued by the Selangor Land Office, since Pakatan Rakyat (PR) governed the state to overcome the issue of illegal waste disposal sites.

The Exco for Local Government, Ean Yong Hian Wah, said that most illegal dumpsites are on government-owned land, like the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) ditch agger or the sides of the Public Works Department (PWD) roads.

He said that if the illegal waste if dumped on private land, then the Land Office will issue the Land Rehabilitation Notice through Notice 7A Section 128 of the National Land Code (NLC) to the landowners to restore the site before the land confiscation notice is issued.

“If no measure is taken, only then the land seizure or forfeiture will be done by the Land Office under 130 of the NLC,” he said during the Selangor State Assembly session today.

He said this when replying to a verbal question from Khasim Abdul Aziz (PAS-Lembah Jaya) regarding the long-term plan to overcome the illegal waste issue in Selangor.

Meanwhile, when answering questions in relation to the estimated total cost for local authorities to manage bulk and illegal waste in 2014, Ean (DAP-Seri Kembangan) said that it was RM4.87 million.

However, he said that the Selangor government proposed to establish a long-term plan for the next three to 20 years in managing solid waste in the state.

This includes the move to carry out research through PE Research Sdn Bhd to provide an Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan for Selangor which will determine the effective method of management and disposal.

In addition, he said that the Solid Waste Collection, Removal and Disposal and Public Cleaning Enactment of Selangor has been enacted.

“The state government is also implementing in-house public cleaning at the local authority level in staged from 2015 and providing the SOP in preparing tender documents as well as the waste collection contractor appointment for all local authorities,” he said.
