CM: Water level at Sg Selangor & Sg Tinggi dams targeted at 70%

SHAH ALAM, 27 Nov: The improvement of the water storage at the reservoirs, between 65 to 70 percent, has been targeted for two dams, Sungai Selangor and Sungai Tinggi, by the end of this year as the main source of water supply in the state.

The Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, said that until November 26, Sungai Selangor has recorded an increase in its readings of 58.11 percent, while Sungai Tinggi is at 52.92 percent.

However, he said that the raw water storage at both reservoirs are still low compared to before 2012, which recorded readings of up to 95 percent.

“The level )raw water) recorded is still significantly lower compared to before 2012 due to the unusual warm weather and s significant reduction in rainfall.

“It is evident by the amount of rainfall recorded in February 2012, 217 milimetre (ml), compared to only 2ml during the same period this year,” he said.

He said this during his closing speech at the Selangor State Assembly today.

However, Mohamed Azmin, who is also the Assemblyman for Bukit Antarabangsa, said that proactive measures to address the decline in raw water at both dams has been overcome by the construction of alternative ponds in Bestari Jaya, including carrying out cloud seeding.

As a result, the rate of water intakes at all dams is no longer at a critical stage.

“The state government has used two services of the Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) and a private company, AF Jet Sdn Bhd, to carry out cloud seeding operations for as many as 119 times, starting March until now, at a cost of RM3.5 million,” he added.
