Political interference the source of civil servant misconduct

SHAH ALAM, 18 Nov: Political interference in public affairs is one of the causes of leakages, wastage and abuse, as reported in the Auditor-General’s Report every year.

The Member of Parliament for Pokok Sena, Datuk Mahfuz Omar, said that interference by politicians cause pressure to government officers involved in carrying out their duties in accordance with the proper guidelines.

“I understand the anxiety of the people in administrative affairs and the government accounts are managed poorly even though the Auditor-General’s Report is presented each year, but the government will not learn from it.

“One of the things that is difficult to avoid by government officers is when there is a specific direction and they know this direction is contrary to monetary policies and so on,” said Mahfuz when contacted by Selangor Kini today.

Mahfuz also believes that the misconduct report presented by the Auditor-General is only part of the many other misconduct involving larger funds.

He explained that this includes the audit report on the National Youth Day 2011 and 2013, which is still being questioned.

“It is the responsibility of the Auditor-General to present it to the people, especially to Parliament, despite being promised in the second session.

“Does this indicate that there is something wrong in the national youth day management audit, but because there was political intervention it was ignored?” added Mahfuz.

Therefore, Mahfuz called on the government and other responsible agencies to conduct a detailed investigation on the misconduct reported by the Auditor General and take decisive action.
