CM: PR focuses on Maqasid Shariah, Hudud to be discussed by the Presidential Council

SHAH ALAM, 23 Dec: Any proposals related to the future of Pakatan Rakyat (PR), including the Hudud issue, should be discussed and decided upon through a special session during the PR Presidential Council session.

The Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, said that PR will be more focused on the issued contained in the Maqasid Shariah such as economy, social and safety because Hudud is not a common ground that can be reached in the coalition.

However, he said that the political bureau meeting which he chaired on December 21 is of the opinion that new views or proposals need to be brought up during the PR Presidential Council session which will take place in early January, next year.

“During the PR Presidential Council conference, we will discuss some of the latest issues such as the goods and services tax (GST), the economic crisis, the weak currency as well as Hudud, if it is raised.

“Hudud is not an issue about individual parties formulating policies, but it should be unified with PR, as previously agreed, where a certain policy must be agreed upon by all PR leaders,” he said after officiating the Selangor Women’s Leadership Convention at the Holiday Villa Hotel today.

Mohamed Azmin, who is also the Deputy President of PKR, said that Hudud is not a new issue that has been brought up by PAS because such a proposal has been discussed among PR leaders previously.

He said that PR respects the Syariah Criminal Enactment II which was approved by the Kelantan government in 1993 before the formation of the Barisan Alternatif (Alternative Front).

“That is the stance we took several years ago, where the late Karpal Singh was also present at the meeting at the PAS headquarters.

“The Kelantan Exco was also present to provide clarification on the Enactment which was approved in 1993 and after a long discussion, we took the consensus in PR,” he said.

Yesterday, The Malaysian Insider published news on the statement by the Selangor PAS saying that PKR should support the intentions of the Kelantan PAS government to implement the Hudud law as the supreme leader is Muslim.

However, its Information Chief, Zaidy Talib, denied that he said PKR should support Hudud law, but said that all Muslims, including PKR members of parliament who are Muslim should support Hudud.

Commenting on the call by Zaidy, Mohamed Azmin believes that the proposal is the view of a senior party leader who is mature, but all decisions need to be bound by PR policies.
