Just one mistake, RMAF forgets Zaidi’s outstanding service of 26 years

SHAH ALAM, 13 Jan: PAS disputed the punishment of dismissal carried out on Major Zaidi Ahmad, which was deemed to be severe compared to his outstanding service record of 26 years with the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).

“The punishment that was meted out against Major Zaidi is so severe, especially since he served outstandingly in the RMAF until dismissed.

“In fact he was awarded several medals for his excellent service,” said the PAS Information Chief, Datuk Mahfuz Omar, taken from Malaysia Kini.

The military court yesterday sentenced dismissal to Zaidy after being found guilty of violating the order by the Armed Forces Council by giving a media statement on the issue of the indelible ink without permission.

The military court presiding officer Col Saadon Hasnan said that the sentence against Zaidi already took into account his excellent record, where he had no disciplinary problems during service.

Saadon said that the excellent and clean track record of the offender and the factor of a first offence were taken into account in the mitigation of the sentence.

A more severe sentence for the offence is imprisonment for two years or dishonourable discharge.

In a statement today, Mahfuz also urged the military authorities to review the decision against Zaidi.

According to Mahfuz, the action is inconsistent with the human rights guaranteed in Article 10 (1) (a) of the Federal Constitution.
