1.4 million tourists projected to visit Kuala Selangor

KUALA SELANGOR, 15 Feb: The Kuala Selangor District Council (MDKS) targets 1.4 million tourists to visit their tourist centres in conjunction with the Visit Selangor Year 2015.

Its Yang DiPertua, Noraini Roslan, said that for this purpose, they are offering complete tour packages that include eco-tourism, sports and heritage.

“Kuala Selangor is the territory that receives the highest interest in the state’s tourism every year.

“We always strive to ensure that this situation remains and grows in the future through a number of improvements in the tourist areas that we have,” she said.

She said this when speaking at the Visit Selangor Year 2015 Launching Ceremony for the Kuala Selangor District Level at Padang Pekan Lama today.

Also present was the state Exco for Tourism, Consumer Affairs, Environment, Elizabeth Wong, and the General Manager of Tourism Selangor, Noorul Ashikin Mohd Din.

Kuala Selangor has complete tourist centres that include eco-tourism, sports and heritage such as Bukit Melawati, the Freshwater Fish Park, Pantai Remis, the Kampung Kuantan Fireflies and the Sungai Sireh Homestay.

Noraini said that MDKS had taken their first steps since 2014 by upgrading some of its tourism sites in effort to stimulate the Visit Selangor Year 2015.

“MDKS spent RM616,000 of the state government allocation to upgrade the Fireflies Tourism Centre (RM400 thousand), the infrastructural facilities at Pantai Remis (RM20 thousand) and the purchase of the tram at Bukit Melawati (RM196 thousand).

“We believe that the returns later would be larger than what was spent,” she said.

For the record, for 2014, MDKS managed to attract 204,717 visitors to the Bukit Melawati Centre (115,793) and the Freshwater Fish Park (9,124) and the Kampung Kuantan Fireflies (79,800) with a total revenue of RM1.417 million.

“Based on this record and the collective efforts taken with improvements to tourist centres, we are confident that the number of visitors and the income for this year can be increased,” she said.

At the same event, Elizabeth also officiated the new tram contributed by the state government to MDKS to boost tourism activity at Bukit Melawati.

Previously, MDKS only had two trams, however it is not enough to accommodate the influx of visitors who want to visit the summit of Bukit Malawati, especially on weekends and public holidays.
