CM: Exempting GST on government services can be done if the Federal Government does so

KUALA KUBU BHARU, 11 May: The Selangor government took a cautious stance regarding the exemption of the goods and services tax (GST) in government services because it involves legislature.

The Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, said that the exemption can be done if the Federal Government gives an exemption on several sectors of services.

He said that even though the implementation of the GST is being resisted, the collection of the tax needs to be done because it is part of the state’s responsibility to the Federal Government.

“We have to be careful, this matter involves legislature and the state government’s responsibility is to collect taxes on behalf of the Federal Government.

“Indeed, Selangor’s stance if to oppose (the GST), but because it was passed in the Dewan Rakyat, can we (Selangor) absorb or not collect taxes?” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after the 5A Notice Form Presentation Ceremony at the Sports Complex Multipurpose Hall today.
