SHAH ALAM, 19 May: The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA) proposed for water treatment plant capacity to be increased to increase the production of treated water.

Its Vice President, Mohd Yusof Abdul Rahman, said that the parties concerned can upgrade their existing plants according to the requirements and specifications needed.

“The production capacity of treated water needs to be increased and relevant parties should study whether it can be done or otherwise in terms of capability.

“This is to increase water reserves, in addition to the construction of the Langat 2 plant. So, there is a need to look for other alternatives to overcome this problem,” he told Selangor Kini.

Yusof said that plants where capability is increased can function in treating and filter contaminants.

“Previously, many cases like the Sungai Langat plant had to be closed due to ammonia contamination, causing several areas to experience supply disruptions.

“So, I think it is time for all plants to be upgraded, but in terms of costs it may incur a great amount of money,” he said.

He also urged the Selangor Water Supply Company (Syabas) to reduce the high amount of non-revenue water.

“It should be done immediately. We do not want consumers to face problems again and all parties have to find solutions immediately to address the issue of treated water,” he said.

Prior to this, the Executive Officer of Syabas, Tan Sri Rozali Ismail, claimed that Selangor is facing treated water shortages as the reserves are at a critical level, which is less than five percent since a year ago.

However, this was denied by the Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali.
