It is too late to establish a GST cabinet committee

SHAH ALAM, 6 May: The proposed establishment of a Cabinet Committee on the Implementation of the GST is deemed to be too late because the government should have thought of it earlier before the tax was implemented on April 1.

The Kelana Jaya Member of Parliament, Wong Chen, said that the government itself has made a statement that they have carried out comprehensive studies for the implementation of the tax, which puts pressure on the people.

“If you want to form a committee, it is too late. Before implementing the GST, the government said that they have been studying it for three to four years.

“If only now they want to establish it, it is a stupid move. It shows that there was no proper planning and a system that the public can understand,” he said when asked to comment on the proposal submitted by the Kuala Selangor Member of Parliament, Datuk Irmohizam Ibrahim.

Prior to this, Irmohizam, who is also the Chairman of the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM), in a statement said that the committee should be established to ensure integrated coordination of implementation between government agencies can be mobilised.

In relation to this, Wong Chen said that the proposal shows that the government has felt the pressure from the people after entering the third month of the implementation of the GST.

For example, he said, the problem of the mobile phone reload card charges has not yet been resolved, showing that the implementation of the GST has not gone smoothly.
