SHAH ALAM, 18 Aug: The Exo meeting on June 24 decided for 84 catchment ponds maintained by the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) to be deepened again in the next four years with an allocation of RM6.7 million.

The Exco for Infrastructure, Public Amenities and Agro-Based Industries, Zaidy Abdul Talib, said that this is to reduce flooding and flash flooding at risk areas.

He said that 20 new flood areas have been identified from the 77 areas involving 95 cases.

“Flash floods are due to internal drainage that is not well maintained, the Flood Mitigation Committee made a remark about this problem.

“The problem of drain depth design that is inappropriate and due to extraordinary rainfall causes floods,” he said when answering a question submitted by Shamsudin Lias (BN-Sungai Burong).

Zaidy said that in 2015, no river in Selangor passed the danger level.

In addition, the committee is also considering to increase the number of catchment ponds.

In total, Selangor has 314 catchment ponds.
