Breeders lost RM4 million in livestock theft 2010 – 2014

SHAH ALAM, 10 Aug: Losses due to livestock theft in Selangor in 2013 is estimated at RM150,000.

The Selangor Director of Veterinary Services (DVS), Dr Akma Ngah Hamid, said that this amount includes losses due to the same case across Malaysia worth RM4 million from 2010 to 2014.

“That is why we introduced the ‘branding’ method to reduce the risk of theft.

“If someone sells livestock that has other branding, we can check whether the animal was purchased or previously lost,” said Dr Akma to Selangor Kini.

Therefore, he advised breeders to register their brands to the DVS.

He added that compared to abroad, registering the branding is currently free.

He expected the branding registration to be charged if this measure is enforces in Acts related to livestock in the future.
