FOMCA: Review fare increase to avoid burdening the people

SHAH ALAM, 2 Aug: The Federal government should review and evaluate the restructuring of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) fare for the Klang Valley to be more reasonable and to not burden the people.

The Deputy President of the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA), Mohd Yusof Abdul Rahman, said that the increase of any good or service will certainly put pressure on consumers, especially those from the low and middle income groups.

“According to research, if the price of any service in Malaysia is more than 10 percent, it will burden the people.

“Especially public transport, we hope that the fare will not burden the people, especially consumers who do not have their own vehicles,” he told Selangor Kini.

Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) in a statement said that the fare structure that consists of the base fare component of RM0.90 cents and the fare component based on the journey per kilometre (km) will start with RM0.815 cents for the first 6km.

A total of RM0.513 cents for the first 6km to 12km will apply, RM0.21 cents for 12 to 18km, RM0.282,18 cents for 24km and RM0.212 cents for more than 24km.

Mohd Yusof said that the fare will affect consumer spending.

“Consumers have to cut spending in other ways such as basic needs, food costs and so on.

“However, the 50 percent discount for students, senior citizens and the disabled is welcomes and should be given to them,” he said.
