SHAH ALAM, 20 Aug: A study is being conducted by a committee under the Housing Exco to help prospective home buyers in Selangor who faced the problem of providing 10 percent downpayment.

The Housing Exco, Iskandar Abdul Samad (PAS-Chempaka), said that study is being conducted based on the model of the ‘My First Home’ scheme carried out in New Zealand.

“The second scheme being discussed under my portfolio right now, those who want to buy homes but do not have a deposit of 10 percent can come to the state government and we will give them the money to be paid to the developer.

“They do not have to pay and it is acknowledged that there are people who find it difficult to ready the deposit. The house will be owned by the state government and the buyer,” he said when winding up the discussion under the Select Committee on Poverty Eradication (JPK-Pembasmian Kemiskinan).

Iskandar said that the state government previously launched the Selangorku Housing Financing Scheme (Dana-Sel), in addition to the scheme that is still in the research stage.

He said that Dana-Sel functions with the state government by buying homes before being rented to less-fortunate Selangorians.

The house is then rented and can be purchased by the residents when they have reached a certain income that is capable.

“If the tenant feels that they can afford it, they can come see the state government to buy the house and the rent they have paid will be deducted,” he said.
