SHAH ALAM, JUL 29: The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (FOMCA) has urged the Federal Government to create an independent Consumer Affairs Ministry to prevent any conflict of interest between traders and consumers.
FOMCA Deputy President Mohd Yusof Abdul Rahman said that it is important to protect consumers’ interest compared to the current situation where consumers and traders’ welfare are both centralised under the same ministry.
“In addition, the government must preserve the 2011 Price Control and Anti-profiteering Act.
“It must also be enhanced to provide more protection to consumers against traders who collect excessive profits,” he said in a media statement.
Both were among the 11 resolutions agreed by FOMCA Supreme Council and Federation members in the 40th FOMCA Delegation Conference on July 28.
The Conference also witnessed Datuk Dr Marimuthu Nadason maintaining the post of President, Yusof as Deputy President and Dato’ Paul Selva Raj as Secretary-General.
Yusof said, the 2010 Competition Act must be enforced in a more aggressive and holistic manner.
“This would create a market free from price manipulation by traders.
“Subsequently this would further improve the protection and welfare of consumers,” he said.
