PUCHONG, JUL 19: The Selangor Government has intensified its development programmes to overcome flood issues in the state for the past two years.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said that the programmes and efforts included the retention ponds managed by the Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS).

“We took the initiative two years ago to determine who would be responsible for the retention ponds, whether it would be JPS or the local authorities.

“The State Government decided that JPS needed to manage the ponds and we allocated RM80 million for upgrading and maintenance purposes,” he told the media.

Mohamed Azmin also touched on the occurrence of floods in Shah Alam and Klang recently, saying that JPS has begun work but it would definitely not be completed in such a short time.

“Work, however, has completed in some areas while work in other areas are ongoing.

“Still, we do not want the flooding to repeat because it would disrupt the economy,” he said.

He added that there were more than 300 retention ponds in Selangor and the decision to hand over the management to JPS was made after his appointment as Menteri Besar in 2014.
