Diphtheria case: Parents should not be lax in vaccinating children

BY SYASYA SUFIAN

KAPAR, AUG 25: Health, Welfare, Women and Family Affairs Exco Dr Daroyah Alwi call upon parents to take their children’s vaccination seriously as following the recent diphtheria case reported in Selangor.

She said, the diphtheria vaccine is one of a combination of five vaccines given in order to protect children from the threat of various diseases.

“When diphtheria was first detected in Selangor, it was unquestionably a concern to the public as it was the first case to be reported.

“Hence, parents should understand the importance of vaccination for children as they are exposed to these risks,” she said to SelangorKini after a press conference in Kapar on August 24.

Previously, the Selangor Health Department reported a diphtheria case involving a 3 year-old child who experienced fever, coughing and vomiting since August 13, and has since been in the Intensive Care Unit of Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment and close monitoring.

Daroyah said the Selangor Health Department and the Malaysian Health Ministry play important roles in continuing to monitoring these cases and prevent them from worsening.

“We hope that there will be no more diphtheria cases reported in Selangor after this,” she said.
