Approximately 1,000 registered as new voters

GOMBAK, SEP 27: Approximately 1,000 new voters were registered under the Voter Registration Counter Programme at Giant Hypermarket in Batu Caves, organised by Gombak Setia Constituency Community Service Centre with cooperation from the Election Commission (EC).

The programme, from 10 am until 7 pm, received encouraging response from visitors who thronged the counters to register themselves as new voters and to change their constituencies.

Gombak Setia Assemblyman Hasbullah Mohd Ridzwan said that initially only four registration counters were opened, however by afternoon, they had to open eight counters due to the high demand.

Although visitors had to queue for a long time, it did not deter them from registering as new voters for the coming election.

Most new voters were youths who had just turned 21 years old and wanted to experience the process of becoming a registered voter.

Hasbullah said the initiative to open these registration counters in big supermarkets was very appropriate, as there was ample parking spaces available. Public servants, who get their salaries at the end of the month, could also get their shopping done after registration.

He also thanked the EC’s staff who had worked relentlessly to register the new voters.

“Not to forget those on duty from the Gombak Setia JPrD and Gombak PAS officials who were attired in green and assisted the visitors,” he said.
