Immediately finalise water issue, avoid serious crisis

SHAH ALAM, 29 June: The state government and the Federal government have been urged to immediately finalise the Selangor water industry restructuring in the interest of the people.

The Coordinator of the Coalition Against Water Privatisation (CAWP), Charles Santiago, said that it is to prevent the people from facing a serious water crisis, especially during the drought.

He said that the main access of water management is not fully owned by the Selangor government even though the agreement has been signed.

“It has to be expedited because in the past week, the weather has been very hot without rain and if it continues, water shortage will occur.

“Therefore, this issue must be resolved soon,” he told Selangor Kini.

At the same time, Charles, who is also the Klang MP, said that he understands that the state government has met with the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA) to finalise the water restructuring on June 25.

However, he said that there was no press release regarding the matter, thus proving that the issue is still pending.

“It is understood that the Federal government is beginning to rethink or review several clauses decided by both parties last year, so much so that the issue is being prolonged.

“I was also told that the Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, will sign an agreement to finalise the Selangor water restructuring but it may be delayed,” he said.
