SHAH ALAM, 28 June: Local authorities in Selangor are conducting various awareness programmes for traders and the public on environmental issues in accordance with the ‘Sustainable Ramadan’ campaign.

The Exco for Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs, Elizabeth Wong, said that among the steps taken is that the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) is contributing biodegradable materials (plates, cups, spoons) to bazaar traders and recycling bags.

Meanwhile, the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) launched the Zero Waste Campaign to reduce food waste and solid waste, as well as cooking oil dumped by the public.

“For the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), a circular has been issued to traders to not use polystyrene and plastic bags throughout their business.

“Similarly, the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) has issued this ban to 1,126 traders in 21 locations,” said Elizabeth Wong in a press statement here.

A special campaign, “Jom Tapau”, was also introduced by the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) and will run continuously starting this Ramadan.

The Kuala Selangor District Council (MDKS) also distributed leaflets and provided cooking oil recycling bins at selected bazaars.

The Kuala Langat District Council (MDKL) and the Hulu Selangor District Council (MDHS) are running the No Plastic Bag Day in their respective areas with MDKL choosing Saturday and MDHS choosing Wednesday.

The Sepang Municipal Council (MPSp) also held a Ramadan Market Briefing on June 11 to provide information on the conditions to be complied with by traders and distributed bags to replace plastic bags in Ramadan markets.

The Sabak Bernam District Council (MDSB) is holding a food safety and food poisoning campaign at the Ramadan Bazaar and distributed 300 food containers made from local products.
