SHAH ALAM, 5 Aug: The problem of garbage in the area under the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) which has been going on for a long time is expected to be solved when the pile of garbage at the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) plant in Semenyih will be transferred to the Tanjung 12 Landfill.

The Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, said that moving the piles of rubbish, which began today, will be managed entirely by Hebat Abadi, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Berhad (KDEB).

He said that Hebat Abadi will also transfer all 30,000 tons of garbage due to RDF’s failure to solve the garbage problem giving rise to complaints from residents of Kajang.

“Hebat Abadi has also been tasked to collect garbage once a week to collect recyclable waste. The garbage collection operations will continue as usual; two times a week for solid waste and once a week for recyclable waste.

“The decision to appoint Hebat Abadi to solve the garbage pile problem in Kajang was done by the State Executive Council (MMKN), which recently discussed the issue of solid waste collection in the MPKj area,” he said in a statement.

Abdul Khalid also informed that the MMKN agreed to conduct an operations audit on the RDF plant to determine the effectiveness of the reduction of residual waste after being processed, in addition to determining the viability and sustainability of the project.

He said that it aims to enable the State Government to identify the best strategies to address the garbage problem in Kajang.

“The MMKN also agreed for a comprehensive study to be conducted on the 100-acre site, which was proposed to become a new landfill to accommodate waste that cannot be processed at the RDF plant.

“An engineer who is an expert on RDF technology will be appointed on a contract basis to evaluate the technology used at the RDF plant.

“MPKJ will only take an engineer specialised in cleaning to resolve the issue of waste collection and disposal, as well as monitoring,” he said.

At the same time, he also said that they agreed that the MPKj agreement with the RDF plant operators should be reviewed to determine their respective responsibilities.

The waste problem in MPKj happened when the RDF plant operating in 2006 were unable to process the waste as agreed in the agreement.

This caused the waste to pile up at the plant, thus disrupting the operation of garbage collection at the MPKj area.
