Amendment to Selangor Non-Islamic Religion Enactment, DAP Receives Criticism from PR Leaders

KUALA LUMPUR, 7 Jan: The DAP Organisation Secretary, Anthony Loke, feels that the issue of the proposed amendments by three Selangor DAP Assemblymen should not be prolonged because it was only a suggestion.

He said that the matter need not be discussed at the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) Leadership Council meeting or with the supreme leaders of DAP.

However, the comments made by PR leadership friends, including the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de facto leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, are received with an open heart.

“We will not discuss this matter at the Pakatan Leadership Council meeting.

“I am not sure (of bringing this up in the meeting) because it is her suggestion (Assemblywoman for Damansara Utama). But any decision must be discussed and referred for the consensus of all component parties in PR.

“I think it is unnecessary for this matter to be prolonged because it is only the suggestion of several Assemblymen. I hope that our friends in PAS and PKR are not to hurt because it is only a suggestion,” he told reporters today.

He said that the amendment cannot be done even if all Selangor DAP Assemblymen agree because the party only has 15 State Legislative Assembly seats.

Previously, three Assemblymen from DAP; Damansara Utama, Yeo Bee Yin; Assemblyman for Kampung Tunku, Lau Weng San, and the Assemblyman for Bukit Gasing, R Rajiv, suggested for an amendment of provisions in the Selangor Non-Islamic Religion Enactment (Control of Propagation Among Muslims) 1988.

The proposal was made because they claimed that the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) acted arbitrarily with legal jurisdiction in the raid on the Bible Society of Malaysia in Petaling Jaya on 2 January.
