Selangor, SPAN Cooperates to Ensure Enough Clean Water

SHAH ALAM, 12 Dec: The Selangor Government assured that clean water supply in the state, the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya is sufficient until 2016.

The assurance was given when the State Government previously implemented water mitigation programmes to increase the capacity of treated water supply to meet consumer demands until, at least, the Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant is ready.

Therefore, the Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, said that the Selangor Government has requested the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) to reconsider the application to approve development in Selangor.

“The Selangor Government and SPAN have agreed to work together to solve problems involving the delayed development of 878 new projects which were rejected on grounds of water shortage.

“This agreement to cooperate was made after a meeting was held on 3 December, with SPAN’s representatives, led by the Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Teo Ten Hua,” said Abdul Khalid after chairing the Selangor State Government Executive Council meeting at the State Government Secretary (SUK) Building today.

He added that during the meeting, SPAN expressed willingness to reconsider all planning applications in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, which were postponed following views and projection obtained by SPAN which indicated that there will be a shortage in water supply after the projects are completed.

In return to SPAN, the State Government agrees to indemnify any action or claim for damages by developers on SPAN following the inability of the State Government to supply water in the quantity required by developers.

“I promise that this will be in force until 30 June, 2014, but it will not apply if the failure to supply water is due to the inability and negligence of water operators or certifying agencies appointed by SPAN to act in a professional manner,” added Abdul Khalid.

SPAN also informed that the State Government is in the process of acquiring the water services industry in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya when the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, through a letter dated 9 September 2013, ordered for this matter to be finalised before or by 31 December 2013.
