Tax Increases by 300 Percent, 20,000 Letters of Objection Sent to DBKL

KUALA LUMPUR, 26 Dec: Over 20,000 letters of objection from various areas in Kuala Lumpur was successfully collected and handed over to the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) in protest of the assessment tax increase of up to 300 percent.

About 1,000 residents living in the country’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, gathered at the DBKL square to voice their objection of the steep increase.

The assembly was also participated by the Batu Member of Parliament, Tian Chua, the Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai, Nurul Izzah Anwar, the Member of Parliament for Wangsa Maju, Datuk Dr Tan kee Kwong, the Member of Parliament for Kuala Krai, Dr Hatta Ramli, the Member of Parliament for Shah Alam, Khalid Samad, and the Member of Parliament for Seputeh, Teresa Kok.

When Nurul Izzah was met after the assembly, she said that DBKL should review the assessment tax which is to be imposed because the increase oppresses those living in Kuala Lumpur that earns a low income.

“Over 20,000 letters of objection, including from the Lembah Pantai Parliament, over 3,000, the Batu Parliament, over 5,000, and so on from other areas, have been sent to DBKL to state objection towards the increase of this tax,” she said.

She said that the DBKL Budget should also be tabled in Parliament to avoid from any abuse because all this while, the people, from Kuala Lumpur in particular, do not know how allocations are used by DBKL throughout the year.

However, the letters of objection could only be submitted to the counter on the ground floor of DBKL, and ignoring the chants of the public who wanted the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur to receive the letters.

Meanwhile, Tian Chua said that DBKL should take the objections of the people seriously in order to avoid worst things from happening.

“The people gathered to state their objection because this increase in tax clearly burdens the people. To avoid from making the people angrier, DBKL should do something about this protest,” he said.

The public began dispersing at 11.45 am, right after all objection forms were submitted to DBKL.
