SHAH ALAM, 20 Jan: The police must prove their competency in dealing with provocation and incitement carried out by Penang Umno leaders because it may trigger tension between races and religions in this country.
The Assemblyman of Sekinchan, Ng Suee Lim, said that the nonchalant action of the police will cause the society to receive the wrong signal, thus being able to create unrest and disharmony among all races and religions.
“The police should take stern action because if it is allowed to portray that they have given the green light to those deliberately fanning the flames of racism, in the end it will become a more complex problem.
“The police have to show that they are professional, otherwise the people will think that they are practicing double standards,” he said when contacted by Selangor Kini yesterday.
On 18 January, several Penang Umno leaders, in a demonstration held at the Sunway Carnival Mall in Seberang Jaya, acted in a provocative manner by carrying banners and also in their words.
Among the Penang Umno leaders involved is the Member of Parliament for Kepala Batas, Datuk Seri Reezal Merican; the Penang Umno Secretary, Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir; the Penang Umno Youth Chief, Farizal Rahim and the former Penang Umno Youth Chief, Sheikh Hussein Mydin.
The provocation involved carrying banners that were defamatory and seditious such as ‘DAP is the enemy of Islam’ and ‘Because of the mouth of DAP leaders, 13 May 1969 happened…Do you want it to happen again?’ and speeches that fanned the flames of racial and religious sentiments.
The action is seen as being deliberately done to gain political advantages by fanning the flames of hatred and anger, which may lead to racial tensions, especially involving the Malay and Chinese communities.
