BANGI, 11 Mar: The two corner clash involving the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) candidate, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail, against the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate, Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, to fight for the Kajang State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seat in the by-election is expected to be intense.

The two female leaders officially became candidates when they submitted their nomination form to the Election Commission (EC) at the Kajang Municipal Sports Council Complex, here today.

The extraordinary traffic congestion heading to the nomination centre in Section 15, Bandar Baru Bangi, did not prevent the supporters of the two leaders to be present to give their support.

Wan Azizah is replacing her husband, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who was disqualified to contest when the Court of Appeal decided that he was guilty in the case involving his former aide, Saiful Bukhari Azlan, on 7 March.

In a press conference, Wan Azizah said that she was overwhelmed by the support of PR supporters, thus giving her a boost of strength to win in the Kajang by-election on 23 March.

She said that she had to head to the Kuala Lumpur High Court to give moral support to Karpal Singh who was charged under the Sedition Act.

The Kajang by-election Managed, Datuk Hasan Nawawi Abdul Rahman, in his announcement, said that the EC received two nomination papers, from Mei Fun who handed it in at 9.07am and from Wan Azizah at 9.10am.

“I hereby announce that the confirmed candidates contesting in constituency of Kajang is Chew Mei Fun and Wan Azizah,” he said in front of candidates and supporters.

Kajang has 38,965 registered voters, with Malay voters making up 48 percent of the total, 41 percent Chinese voters and 10 percent Indian voters.

In the six-cornered clash in the 13th General Election (GE13) on 5 May, Lee Chin Cheh (PKR) received 19,571 votes with a majority of 6,842, thus allowing him to defeat the BN candidate from MCA, Lee Ban Seng, who received 12,727 votes.
