CM: JAIS should receive views from MMKN on issues involving the non-Muslim community

SHAH ALAM, 4 June: The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) is given the freedom to take action and report on Muslims, however actions involving the non-Muslim community requires the views of the Selangor State Executive Council (MMKN).

The Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, said that JAIS must comply with the Standard Operating Procedures set and action will be taken against any officer who fails to do so.

He said that the State Government is disappointed with the move by JAIS in conducting inspections on a woman during her wedding ceremony recently.

“According to JAIS, it was not a raid. According to the police, it was a raid. According to us, it is a humiliating matter.

“We need to have some respect because a wedding is usually a big thing,” he said after chairing the MMKN today.

Earlier, he and the Executive Council line-up heard a briefing from the JAIS Enforcement Division regarding the inspection carried out at the woman’s wedding, Zarina Abdullah Majid.

After the discussion, Abdul Khalid said that JAIS has expressed willingness to help Zarina solve the problem regarding the status of her religion.

“JAIS informed that this preliminary investigation showed that the women involved is registered under an Islamic name by her father for personal reasons, but has never practiced the way of life and teachings of Islam.

“The State Government has also ordered JAIS to examine cases involving non-Muslims so that such incidents do not recur,” he added.

On June 1, JAIS arrested a bride who was in the middle of her wedding with her partner at a temple in Petaling Jaya.

The arrest invited various reactions from the public, including political leaders and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) who disputed the action.
