Third Klang Bridge to reduce congestion by 20%, to be completed in July 2016

SHAH ALAM, 26 June: The Third Klang Bridge, which is expected to be completed on July 13, 2016, will be able to disperse traffic congestion around the Klang Town, the Tengku Kelana Bridge and the Kota Bridge by about 20 percent, compared to the present flow of traffic.

The Executive Councillor in charge of Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi, said that the results came from the impact study conducted by the Selangor Public Works Department before the Third Klang Bridge begins in the middle of next month.

According to the Selangor PWD, on average 43,000 vehicles use the Tengku Kelana Bridge and 147,087 for the Kota Bridge for every 16 hours, but with the Third Klang Bridge, it is expected to disperse about 60 thousand vehicles.

“This will enable us to accommodate the number of vehicles until 2032,” said Dr Ahmad Yunus during a press conference at the handing-over ceremony of the letter of acceptance to build the 3rd Klang Bridge at the State Government Secretary (SUK) Building today.

Dr Ahmad Yunus added that the construction company, Cergas Murni Sdn Bhd, was appointed as the contractor after successfully passing technical evaluation and offering the lowest price in the project’s open tender, using the State Government reserve funds.

“The open tender process for this project was opened on March 19, 2014, and closed on April 22, 2014, with 23 contractors taking part in the tender process and the opening of the tender in front of the public was held in the evening of the date of the tender closing,” he added.

Prior to that, the Selangor PWD Director, Datuk Hamizan Mohd Inzan, during the briefing at the same event, explained that the construction of the bridge does not involve structures in the river, which could cause garbage sediments and obstruct river transport routes in the Sungai Klang.

The Third Klang Bridge, which connects Jalan Tanjung Shawal and Jalan Sungai Bertih, will be built in two stages – the first phase would be the building of the bridge and the second stage would be road widening.
