SHAH ALAM, 19 Aug: It is hoped that Plus Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) will review the proposal to abolish the cash lanes on the Federal Highway involving the Batu Tiga Toll Plaza and the Sungai Rasau Toll Plaza.
The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA) Communication Director, Mohd Yusof Abdul Rahman, said that motorists should be given the option to use the cash lane.
He said that lanes using prepaid cards like the Touch N Go or Smart Tag can be increased, but there also should be cash lanes.
“We understand that the reason (removing the cash lanes) is to make the traffic at tolls smooth, but he must remember that not all motorists pass through the highway every day; some use it occasionally.
“So, it is not fair to them because the card system is prepaid; we pay first the then use later. What if it is just the one time, the rest would go to waste.
“There are also cases where the cards used are damaged, then they are forced to use the cash lane,” he told Selangor Kini.
He was contacted to comment on the notification by Plus to motorists that the cash lanes will not be operational starting 1 September 2014 at the two toll plazas on the Federal Highway.
Elaborating, Yusof said that the system proposed by Plus can only be implemented if the use of prepaid cards is more comprehensive by motorists in Malaysia.
“There are countries like Hong Kong which uses this card payment system widely.
“But they still provide cash services to give consumers a choice,” he added.
